OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) sets faster and suits structural work like columns and beams. PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) is more durable, eco-friendly, and ideal for slabs, plastering, and general construction. For most home construction in India, PPC is the recommended choice.
You can check cement quality using 7 simple tests: colour check, float test, hand feel test, smell test, setting time test, strength cube test, and date of manufacture check. Good cement should be grey with a bluish tint, cool to touch, and lump-free.
For a standard 1,000 sq ft single-floor house in India, you will typically need 400–450 bags of cement (50 kg each), depending on the number of floors, design, and concrete mix used. Foundation and structural work consume the most cement.
