How to Check Cement Quality Before Buying: 7 Simple Tests
May 23, 2026 • 2 min read

You can check cement quality using 7 simple tests: colour check, float test, hand feel test, smell test, setting time test, strength cube test, and date of manufacture check. Good cement should be grey with a bluish tint, cool to touch, and lump-free.
Introduction
Cement is the backbone of your home. And yet, most homebuilders never verify what they're buying. Low-quality cement can lead to cracks, weak structures, and expensive repairs down the line. Here are 7 practical tests you can do — before a single bag goes into your foundation.
The 7 Cement Quality Tests
- Colour Test: Good cement is grey with a greenish or bluish tint. A brownish shade indicates excess lime or poor quality.
- Float Test: Throw a small handful into a bucket of water. Quality cement particles should float for a while before sinking — not clump immediately.
- Hand Feel Test: Rub cement between your fingers. It should feel smooth and fine — like flour. Gritty texture = coarse grinding = poor quality.
- Temperature Test: Insert your hand inside a cement bag. Good cement feels cool. A warm feeling indicates the cement is undergoing hydration — it's old or poorly stored.
- Smell Test: Fresh, quality cement has no smell. A musty or earthy smell indicates moisture contamination.
- Setting Time Test: Make a thin paste, shape into a block, and leave it undisturbed. It should begin to set within 30 minutes and fully set within 10 hours.
- Date of Manufacture: Always check the bag. Never use cement older than 3 months — every month reduces strength by up to 20%.
What to Check on the Bag Itself
- BIS certification mark (ISI mark) — mandatory for all cement sold in India
- Grade clearly printed: OPC 43, OPC 53, or PPC
- Manufacturing date and batch number
- Net weight: 50 kg standard (weigh a bag if in doubt)
- Wonder Cement's tamper-evident packaging ensures what you order is what you receive
